Safety in Diving: What a Good Dive Center Must Guarantee

Choosing a safe dive center is essential. Learn what to look for: certified instructors, maintained equipment, safety briefings, emergency gear, and how to pick a reliable center abroad.

Certified Instructors

A serious dive center works only with instructors certified by recognised agencies such as PADI, SSI or CMAS. Check that credentials are up to date and visible.

Equipment Maintenance and Inspection

Equipment must be maintained and inspected regularly. Tanks, regulators, BCDs and masks should be in good condition. Do not hesitate to ask when the last service was done.

Safety Briefings

Before each dive, a clear safety briefing must cover the site, depth, duration, signals, buddy pairs and emergency procedures. No briefing means higher risk.

Emergency Oxygen and First Aid

The center must have emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit on site or on the boat. Staff should be trained in first aid and oxygen administration (e.g. DAN training).

Dive Insurance

Dive insurance (e.g. DAN) is strongly recommended. A good center will ask for proof and may offer or recommend a policy.

Group Size and Weather

Group size should be limited (often 4–8 divers per guide) so that everyone can be supervised. Weather and sea conditions must be monitored; dives should be cancelled or adapted when necessary.

Communication and Choosing a Center Abroad

Communication protocols (surface signals, boat pick-up) must be clear. When choosing a center abroad, look for reviews, certifications, and a professional attitude. EviDive can help you find and book safe, quality dive centers at many destinations.
